Ex-JP's sex charges dropped
Jun. 11, 2003
Ten charges of sexual assault
levelled against a former justice of the peace in Scarborough have been
withdrawn after the crown attorney told the court that continuing the
prosecution does not serve the public interest.
Regis Jogendre, 70, was originally charged with 11 counts. He was acquitted May
13 of one charge in connection with an incident on a subway train involving an
18-year-old woman.
The other 10 charges were in
connection with incidents that allegedly occurred between June, 1997, and March,
1999. The complainants saw Jogendre in an official capacity as a JP, Crown
Attorney Susan Chapman said. She cited the defendant's resignation in light of
these allegations and his poor health as reasons for dropping the charges.
