Children's Aid Society failed to report rape of a girl by one of its own foster parents

A former TTC employee impregnated a 15-year-old girl in the care of the Catholic Children’s Aid Society 35 years ago, but the agency never reported the incident to police, a court has heard.

Howard Smith, 61, admitted Tuesday in Ontario Superior Court to having full intercourse three or four times with the girl in 1978 without using a condom, thus impregnating her when he was in his late 20s.

The CCAS became aware of the pregnancy and placed the girl in a home for unwed mothers.

Class action lawsuit against child protection agencies in Massachusetts for abusing children in care

BOSTON (AP) — A trial is set to begin in a lawsuit alleging the abuse and neglect of thousands of Massachusetts children in foster care.

Opening statements are scheduled Tuesday in federal court in a class-action lawsuit filed in 2010 by the national advocacy group Children’s Rights.

The lawsuit alleges that the state Department of Children and Families violated children’s constitutional rights by placing them in dangerous and unstable situations. The suit seeks broad reforms on behalf of approximately 7,500 children in state care.

When his ex-girlfriend announced she was moving to Toronto and taking their daughter with her, Ryan hired a lawyer and spent $30,000 trying to stop her. The judge ruled against him. “So that was a waste of money, really,” he says.

Men and fathers in the shadow and wake of the Montreal Massacre: a different perspective

Many of the annual events sponsored by organizations in the wake of the Montreal Massacre are being used to get more money for those organizations which depend on handouts for their domestic violence programs.
