Mr. Justice John R. Belleghem - Ontario Superior Court of Justice
Comments and Discussion
April 2006Canada Court Watch interviewed children in person who were being abused by their mother after Justice Belleghem allowed the mother to return to the home where the children were staying with their father. At the time, the mother had two assault charges against her for assaulting one of the children. The children testified to Court Watch that they did not want their mother back in the house to terrorize and threaten them any more. Justice Belleghem allowed the abusive mother to go back into the home without getting the wishes of the children known beforehand. The father's solicitor in court asked to have the children interviewed by the Office of the Children's Lawyer but Justice Belleghem would not grant this wish before he granted an order for the abusive mother to return home to abuse the children further. Court Watch has extensive videotaped interviews with the children in which they describe some of the horrific abuse that they were subjected to by their mother and it would appear as if Justice Belleghem's order was most directly responsible for placing the children at risk of harm.

An affidavit was sworn by a member of the public, Stefano Kreiger, who attended a court in Owen Sound Ontario presided by Justice Belleghem. In his affidavit, Mr. Kreiger swore that Justice Belleghem said in his court that whenever there is conflict between mothers and fathers, that it is mothers who will get custody of the children. The parent who was the subject of the court hearing reported that he was denied copies of the transcripts to this hearing and that custody of his child was given to the mother who was both violent and abusive.
